We were setting up a new Minecraft server at HTG headquarters to play the awesome survival mode game (which uses vanilla Minecraft, no mods required), when we realized we didn’t have an article about how to find your saved games folder. There are tons of Minecraft worlds on the Internet that you can download, unzip, and then play on your local computer without having to join a server or set one up, but to do that, you’ll need to know how to get to your saved games, and Minecraft doesn’t put those worlds into a place you’d expect, like your Documents folder. For Multiplayer Servers [Mac + Windows] 1) Open you Minecraft Server Folder. 2) Drag any Save File you want to Play with into the Folder. 3) After that open your 'server.properties' File. The alternative way to find your saves folder without loading up the Minecraft client: 1) Click on the Start button in Windows. 2) Now, type run into the search box, and select the Run program that should appear in the top of the results.
Finding Your Minecraft Saved Games on Windows Your saved games are stored inside of the AppData folder, which isn’t that easily to find or get to because the whole AppData folder is hidden. The problem is that any directory that starts with a period is hidden in Linux. /home//.minecraft You can also get there by using the shortcut which represents your user folder directory. /.minecraft Loading Saved Games Once you click to Single Player mode, you’ll see the list of saved games. If you exit this screen and then click back in, you’ll immediately see the new saved game that you unzipped or otherwise copied into this folder.
There are many reasons you would need the Minecraft files and save folder location. Maybe you want to backup your save files and your worlds, you might want to install some mods or resource packs or you want to find the screenshots you have been taking of your creations. Having backup saves of your world is very useful because in Minecraft you never know what will go wrong. There are even times where your world could get erased because of a crash. Or, you could be carrying 300 iron, 30 diamond, full diamond gear, and take a wrong step into lava because you were too busy starting at the TV. With a backup folder, even though it would be a little cheap, you can recover your stuff. Everyone makes mistakes. Of course abusing this would make the game less fun, but there will always be those times you wish you had a backup save. Note that making backup saves when using mods is very important.
Mods can cause issues with Minecraft and your world saves are even more prone to corruption.
